I Wanna Be a Publisher

Yeppers, I do, cause I just did a critique of a friends almost finished book and it makes me want to fling money at her so she could quit her day job and write full time.

Wish someone would do that for me.

I receive emails everyday from various self-help writers groups/blogs/companies. Writers Digest saturates my inbox with multiple emails touting various books, webinars, articles, blogs...all aimed at helping the would be writer find an agent and have that agent hook a publishing deal...oh and also they want to part you from your meager funds too.

I read the blogs, pass on the books and look askance at the princely cost of writing courses and webinars. Why spend good money on stuff you can go down to your local library and check out, for free. Or I just surf the web to find the info I need. Like how to write a sword fight scene. That was one I queried google on and found a plethora of articles. I also shopped Amazon and downloaded samples from interestingly titled books that would help me spruce up my plot or they had the secret formula to writing a best seller.

But I didn't want to write a formula book...I wanted to write a unique take on a very old subject. Trouble is...so are a lot of other writers and they are all self publishing their ebooks on Amazon. I seem to be late to the parade.

So, back to the title of this blog. I want to be a publisher and publish my own book and those of my friends, cause they are good writers, just stuck on the hamster wheel of work, bill paying, work, bill paying. Just like me.

    1. Thanks Lara...I am taking my time. Heck it's been only 6 years! *giggle* But really I want this to be a good read so I will polish it and polish it until I can't polish it no more.... *smile*

      Thank for the pep talk!

  2. So you want to be a publisher, Debra? Ready for nonstop work? Too fling fists full of dollars at an author, you have to first make two fists full of dollars in a glutted market. That's what the big 6 has found out with the new boon of self-publishing.

Utopic, is the word I can think of to describe this post. There are some hard decisions to make when being a indie publisher. Editing is just one part. There's also marketing channels, distribution channels, rejection criteria, cover artists, and accounting to name just a few hurdles.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade or your enthusiasm, but those are the facts. If you are serious about being a publisher. Stick the tip of your toes in the water with Smashwords publisher options, and then branch out from there. Test the market first to see if you can make a go of it.

    1. Jo...I know all the problems. I worked in marketing in the 80's and 90's in Silicon Valley and I also published my own magazine back in the 90's too! As to cover art, I am a graphic artist too. When I had my magazine I was writer, editor, graphic designer, photographer, marketer, sales force and distribution too. It was difficult but I loved doing it. What I didn't love was my husband hounding me to make money RIGHT NOW or he would divorce me cause I was such a failure. Ugh...thank God he did! :)

Anyway, thanks for reading and throwing the much needed pot of cold water over my head. I have this nasty tendency to spout first and uh oh later.

    1. Well, I am as poor as a church mouse. I have a lot of dreams Brandy. Publishing is just one of them. It's what keeps me going...huge dreams.
